A 18th Century English variety with unique red stems. It is a hardier plant and stronger in flavour than today’s varieties. Some argue Red Stalk has the best flavour of all celeries. Leaves and stalks can be eaten raw or used in cooking where the colour is retained and the stronger flavour is fully released.

Celery can be tricky to get going as seed is very fine, it is slow to germinate and seedling growth is slow (making them easy targets for slugs and snails). Keep moist, do not let seed dry out. Grows well in full sun with plenty of compost. Keep well watered.

Companion Plants

Plant with Bush and pole beans. Celery can help repel bean beetles from bush beans and pole beans.

Avoid planting parsley, parsnips, turnips, or carrots
